In commencing to publish the "Sinkings and Borings of Strata in Northumberland and Durham," your Committee have to state that, in addition to the accounts extracted from the valuable documents bequeathed to the Institute by the late W. Watson, they are indebted to Messrs. W. N. Atkinson, E. F. Boyd, S. C. Crone, J. Daglish, E. W. Embleton, G. B. Forster, Wm. Green, jun., J. Johnston, G. A. Lebour, J. R. Liddell, George May, J. B. Simpson, W. Spencer, J. Taylor, and others, who kindly Lent their books, &c., for many of the more recent accounts of Strata, and assisted in the classification and identification of the exact positions of the borings on the map. They propose to issue all that have now been received (nearly 8,000), and for convenience, to publish them in alphabetical order, and numbered with reference to an outline map which will be appended. The letterpress will be numbered independently of the general Mining Institute volumes, so that it may be bound separately.
The Committee will publish the sections as they have been received, without alteration, except where good authority for corrections was available; and if any errors be discovered by members, the Committee will be greatly obliged by early attention being drawn thereto. They will also be glad to receive any additional sections or suggestions from any one, in order that the work may be made as complete and perfect a record as possible of the Strata of the Newcastle Coal-field.
A Preface with full acknowledgements, &c., is reserved until the close of the work.
