Year Born:   abt. 1796
Colliery:   Shotton Moor
Company:

Buried:   [not known]

Description

They had entered the cage and given the signal for it to descend, but after going down only three fathoms, Brown Snr. called for it to be drawn back up. The engine was reversed, but before the cage could be drawn to bank, it fell to the bottom of the shaft. A man working on the rolley way 60 yards from the shaft found the two men lying dead in the cage, "their bodies almost crushed to pieces." On examination, it was discovered that a link on the chain holding the cage had broken; it had only been in use for a fortnight.
