Description

An inquest was held on 15 February into the death of Thomas McDormand, the ten year old son of pitman John McDormand. ‘On previous Sunday night, the deceased was entrusted by his father to put a tub of coals down an incline in Cassop pit, but instead of going behind the tub and pushing it, went to the forepart and pulled it, and as he was going through the door-way his head was jammed between the tub and a piece of timber. His skull was extensively fractured, and he died the following morning from the effects of the injury.’
