Description

On Monday, 4 April, it was reported that a locomotive "Prince", No.7, which ran on the West Durham Railway, had blown up at Job’s Hill Colliery killing 3 men. The boiler had burst at the fire end and carried away the chimney. One man, John Harwood, a number taker, was at the tender end at the time of the explosion with the fireman. ‘He was carried a distance of 80 yards over the top of the cabin and the end of some workshops, and was quite dead when picked up.’ James Murray, the fireman, was not blown as far away, but was still in a very bad state and not expected to recover.
