James Clarkson
A coal cutterman was killed at Mainsforth Colliery while he and his mate were flitting a compressed air driven "arc-wall" coal cutter mounted on a special bogie, weighing in all about 3 tons. They were taking it down a road dipping 1 in 18, under its own power at a speed of about 1 mile per hour. His mate was going back to the hogger ready to turn off the air and was about 40 yds. away when the machine suddenly stopped. He returned at once and found deceased fatally crushed between the gear box at the side of the machine and a roadside prop. How he came to be caught is not known.
