A hewer was killed at Sacriston Victoria Colliery, Durham. Deceased was hewing in a stook 7 yards wide, which had holed into an old bord, the roof of which was unsupported. He was caught by a large fall of roof. In all broken districts where juds are holing into old places which are upstanding with the roof unsupported, there is great danger when the holing coal becomes so thin as to be useless as a support. This danger could be greatly minimised if the jud was holed through narrow, say not more than 6 feet wide, and supports set in the old place before the remainder of the holing coal was extracted.
