George Cheeseborough
At Sherburn Hill Colliery, Durham, a deputy having first removed the solid sheet plate which totally enclosed all the moving parts, was attempting to replace a gate end loader scraper chain, which had slipped off the driving sprocket. He was prising the chain back into position by means of a spanner when he gave instructions for the loader to be started in order to enable the sprocket to wind on the chain. He failed to notice that he had inadvertently placed his head between two of the scraper chain bars 18 inches apart, with the result that when the chain was set in motion he was instantly killed. The chain should have been replaced by slackening off the adjustable-tension roller, and the protecting guard refixed prior to the loader being started.
